Support for Raspberry Pi 5

Hi all!

Just getting into LoRaWAN and I’ve been around the block with Balena and now would like to test out ChirpStack.
I already have an issue, myself. I got the latest and greatest and too eagered to get my hands dirty but the Raspberry Pi 5 is still new to be support as well as the Pi 3/4.
I saw other post already about the Pi 5 but saw they were closed. I just wanted to have an open thread for all Pi 5 releted topics/questions.
So far with OpenWRT is some what support the CM5 at the moment, the Pi 5 has a snapshot as of now and seems close to get the full 24.10 support.
https://openwrt.org/releases/snapshot

Has anyone played with the Pi 5 with ChirpStack in any way so far?

I did use pi5 it works fine but the thing is that i used bookworm and installed chirpstack from source code.

Hi.

While this is the Gateway OS sub-forum, you mentioned that you’re new to LoRaWAN. So I hope that it’s understood that it’s not strictly necessary to use Chirpstack’s concentratord/Gateway OS to get a LoRaWAN solution with Chirpstack. It’s just Chirpstack’s way of doing that. Technically, various major LNS providers also have their own way of doing things.

The standard way is to have a packet forwarder built for the LoRaWAN hardware, and pointed to the LNS (which is Chirpstack etc). These would be the Semtech UDP Packet Forwarder or BasicStation, or 100% compatible.

Hey @Mohan_B

You followed Documentation v4 and just followed its steps fine?
I tried to look up bookworm but couldn’t find anything that may be related to what you used. Can you educate me on what it is? I would like to try this.

Hey @sp193

Thank you for the clarification.
I’ve been struggling to find other gateways OS for the Pi 5/RAK5146. So far just found RAK’s and Chirpstack’s OS.
I think it might be due to trying to use too new of hardware and it’s not widely supported yet? Not sure.

Sure do you have discord or anything? its a lengthy process to keep it short what I did is installed raspberrypi os for pi5 and installed packet forwarder(for HAL) and chirpstack(LNS) from sourcecode.

Hey @Mohan_B

I am on Discord: dovesvscrows

Hello, do you have any updates, can I use a Raspberry Pi 5?

Hey @giacomo

I haven’t gotten a chance to try it.
I didn’t get a hold of @Mohan_B on discord yet. We connected but haven’t talked about it.
Maybe me tagging them will help ha.

it works you need to install all the modules in pi os in pi5
